SCIENCE FOR KIDS BRINGS BACK THE CAT IN THE HAT!

August 31,2010

HAVE YOU HEARD?   ” THE CAT in the  HAT KNOWS a LOT ABOUT THAT!”  It’s a new science program for kids from PBS.  Beginning on Labor Day, the cat is given voice by Martin Short,  and the goal is to get kids excited about science.  The full story was featured in the New York Times on Sunday, August 29 (http://www.dailycomet.com/article/20100830/ENTERTAINMENT/100829350/1275?Title=The-Cat-in-the-Hat-comes-back-in-the-name-of-science).

This, of course, is the goal of Recess Music and its Celebrate Earth Music Series!  “Celebrate Earth,” “Growing Veggie Soup,” and the autumn release of “Ocean Motion” are each educational and entertaining music for children and families that promote our beautiful planet.

RECESS MUSIC CELEBRATES THIS GREAT SCIENCE SITE FOR KIDS!

WHAT A GREAT WAY TO “CELEBRATE EARTH.” If you wish to enhance your child’s interest in science go to http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/. Take a look at the “GameZone” tab at the top of the home page, you will find lots of math and science activities for kids. I especially like the “SciFiZone”, which includes a mail-in opportunity for comments and questions from the kids themselves. Also included is a “TeacherZone” presenting a variety of materials and resources for parents and teachers. Recess Music loves the science information presented here, what a great compliment to our earth friendly music series! Perhaps your family can listen to our “Celebrate Earth,” and “Growing Veggie Soup,” CDs while having fun with science.

PRESCOTT PARK AND PORSTMOUTH CELEBRATE EARTH

I have had the pleasure of living in many wonderful areas of our diverse and beautiful country, and I read some nice news about Portsmouth, one of the places I’ve always considered home:

Prescott Park first site for Zero Waste bins
By Charles McMahon (July 24, 2010)

Prescott Park just got a little greener.

Visitors to the riverside park can now expect to see a new artistic twist to a recycling program once dominated by boring bins and trash cans.

Thanks to work of the members of Zero Waste Portsmouth, the park is the first site in the city that features a zero waste station filled with artistic and environmentally conscious merit.

Karina Quintans, member of Zero Waste Portsmouth, said the organization is a grass-roots partnership of the Islington Creek Neighborhood Association, EcoMovement and Tim Gaudreau Studios.

Quintans said the zero waste station in the park is the first of seven stations to be situated around the city as part of the Downtown Portsmouth Zero Waste Project.

The article goes on to explain that the initiative is conjunction with the Portsmouth School System, whose students contributed to the design of the Zero Waste stations in order to make visually appealing locations that will be inviting for people of all ages to use.

I think this is a great idea – and I love the fact that the town is planning 15 eventual stations, and not just the 7 initial sites.

Thanks to Zero Waste Portsmouth, the Islington Creek Association, EcoMovement, and Tim Gaudreau for Celebrating Earth!
